Corrective Surgery for inflammatory gingival hyperplasia after use of fixed orthodontic appliance: Clinical case report

The inflammatory gingival hyperplasia it is common in patients which uses fixed orthodontic appliance, due the necessity of a more detailed hygiene, which can lead to corrective surgery to remove the hyperplastic gingival tissue, in order to the patient have again a satisfactory oral hygiene and a more attractive smile. The objective of this work is to report a clinical case of gingivectomy in patients with inflammatory gingival hyperplasia, due to the use of fixed orthodontic appliance associated with poor hygiene. A female patient, had been wearing fixed orthodontic appliance for 2 years, and during the clinical examination it was possible to observe some caries lesions, accumulation of bacterial plaque and an increase in gingival tissue caused by poor oral hygiene. The treatment of hyperplastic gingiva was performed the gingivectomy, removing all imflamed gingival tissue. The pos-surgery was satisfactory, because there was a adequate tissue rapair, absence of symptomatology, without any evidence of inflammation. In this case study, it was possible to conclude that the progression of inflammatory gingival hyperplasia can be easily influenced by bacterial biofilm, therefore, besides the surgical removal, it is necessary the oral hygiene adequation, through instructions and preventive visits to the dentist, in order to prevent injury recurrence.
