Abstract

Dental ankylosis is an anomaly defined as the anatomical fusion of the cementum or dentine with the alveolar bone, considered common in the deciduous dentition, and may occur at any stage of the dental eruption. This work aims to present a literature review in order to clarify the main factors about this anomaly, offering the necessary knowledge to the dentist. In this way, the literature classifies dental ankylosis in 3 degrees, being: mild degree, moderate degree and severe degree, addressing the correct diagnosis and treatment for each stage of this anomaly. The diagnosis of a dental ankylosis is very important so that the best treatment can be defined, and the clinical and radiographic characteristics are the main forms of diagnosis. The success of the treatment is often related to the early diagnosis of this type of eruption alteration as well as the choice of the best option of intervention against the four forms of treatment: dislocation of the ankylosed tooth, building occlusal contacts artificially extraction or just monitoring.
