This scientific production aims to report on the implantation of etonogestrel as a safe contraceptive method. In addition, it was approched the main reasons for discontinuation of the method, the benefits or harms caused by it, the risk factors, as well as the satisfaction assessment of the users with the use of the method. In order to this, it was sought to base this research on a systematic review carried out since 2014, based on the search for the descriptors "Implant", "Etonogestrel", "Contraceptive", "Pregnancy" and "Methods" in the American database PUBMED and VHL (Virtual Health Library - MEDLINE). 201 articles were searched in the chosen databases. Of these, 13 were duplicates, 11 were systematic reviews and 166 were not included in the chosen criteria, so they were excluded, with only 11 articles remaining. About the studied method, in addition to its effectiveness for two more years after the proposed limit, it represents a lower average annual cost and has a satisfactory continuation rate, including a good tolerance to the method. The implant represents a very safe and effective method with a minimum failure rate. Abnormal uterine bleeding is the most prevalent adverse effect in the choice of method discontinuation. Despite some inconclusive issues on the subject, the research stands out for its importance at the present time.
