Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the diseases that affect modern society, which leads us to the fact that many patients that are undergoing dental treatment are carriers of this disease. and it seems that many of these patients don’t understand that a good oral hygiene and the absence of oral diseases can become an important ally for glycemic control, which once monitored, cause improvements in oral conditions. Methodology: This is a bibliographical survey to evaluate the relationship between Diabetes and Periodontal disease. A bibliographical survey of book chapters, scientific articles, doctoral and Master's theses and online journals, published in Google scholar, Scielo, Pubmed, Brazilian and international journals, in the period of 1987 to 2018, were selected in the period of 60 publications, after reading 40 studies were considered for this work, and based on methods of deductive approach, there was compilation of all the information. Result: good hygiene and absence of oral diseases can be an important ally for glycemic control, which, once monitored, bring improvements in oral conditions.. Conclusion: The epidemiological association between both refers to the need for periodontal treatment in diabetic patients to reduce chronic inflammation, thus assisting in glycemic control, and good monitoring of diabetes can mitigate the damage caused by periodontal disease.
