Major Oral Alterations in Pediatric Oncology Patients

Abstract

Cancer is the disordered growth of cells, when malignant is unpredictable and aggressive and can be triggered by internal and external factors. Their rates have doubled in the last thirty years making the highest death rate among children and adolescents ages 0-19. The objective of this study is to review all oral manifestations in pediatric patients who undergo oncological treatment in the literature and to highlight the importance of dental care soon after the discovery of the disease, addressing the prevention and treatment of the main oral manifestations in cancer patients. Among the two hundred and fifty four articles found, forty articles with relevant content were selected for this work. Exclusion criteria were articles with inadequate methodology, incomplete, unavailable in their entirety and the articles that had no relation to the theme. The dental surgeon is the professional capable of diagnosing, accompanying and alleviating the annoyances of adverse oral effects in the treatment of the cancer patient, avoiding the worsening of the adverse effects of the antineoplastic treatment, being of paramount importance in the multidisciplinary team in the pediatric oncological treatment.
