Abstract

Dentin hypersensitivity is very present in daily practice and comprehended as an exacerbated response to a sensory stimulus that usually wouldn't cause pain in a healthy tooth, is a pathology that affects individuals of both sexes in an ample part of the population and various dental groups, causing oral discomfort and inconvenience to the individual's life. It has a multifactorial etiology and several theories try to explain the pain mechanism, currently, the hydrodynamic theory is the most accepted. This work proposes to present a literature review about the usability of fluoride varnishes in the treatment. Performed by two independent researchers using the Pubmed, Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), and Google Academics databases, applying the following search descriptors in Portuguese “hipersensibilidade dentinária”, “verniz fluoretado” and in English "dentinal hypersensitivity", "fluoride varnish". Fluoride varnish shows as a powerful therapeutic resource to minimize the symptoms of dentin hypersensitivity. Acts efficiently due to the formation of a waterproofing film, sealing the dentin surface. It has the advantage of operating as a source of fluorinated compounds. Among some treatments used to treat this pathology, it is clear that, in this literature review, the use of varnish is not a treatment that lasted or long but effective and may present successes and failures. Its indication is related to the low cost of the product and its simplicity of application. Concluding that the fluoride varnish can be indicated in the treatment of hypersensitivity, that during the clinical evaluation of the condition, the dental surgeon will be able to offer the patient a timely and satisfactory treatment, based on a periodicity of return visits.
