Abstract

Violence against children is seen by health professionals as a complex situation in their care, diagnosis and treatment. The objective is to analyze the perceptions of health professionals regarding the child victim of violence. The research was conducted at the Dr. Serafim de Carvalho Municipal Health Center hospital, with eight professionals including doctors and nurses. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, analyzed based on content analysis. Among the results of this study, we used data published in the Epidemiological Bulletin of the Municipal Health Secretariat on violence against children. The professionals highlighted difficulties and the need for training on the subject. The types of violence identified against children by professionals in their care were: neglect, physical violence, sexual and psychological violence. The study demonstrates that professionals try, as best as possible, to support families in the recognition of violence, providing listening, guidance and referral to the competent bodies; despite encountering difficulties in this process, such as dealing with violence, as it involves hierarchical power relations and domination by the aggressor; although its link with alcohol and other drug use is evident. Episodes of violence may be “hidden” within the family environment. The study highlighted the importance of networking and more effective actions by governmental and non-governmental institutions.
